Where’s my second period?

Hi,

I had surgery back at the end of February resulting in me loosing a tube. I had my first period 4-5 weeks after but am currently late for my second by a few days ( not pregnant ). I’ve had a few pms symptoms such a bloating, mood swings and can feel a pulse like feeling and dull ache. Is it normal for periods to be irregular for a while?

Dear Soph,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Periods can take some months to settle into a rhythm that is more normal for us following ectopic pregnancy.

Periods can be delayed for a number of reasons including stress or even (as surprising as it may sound) excessive exercise or weight loss. Doctors normally consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters. If it has been more than 42 days since the first day of your last period, I would suggest asking your doctors to investigate further. Also, while I do not want to alarm you, if there is any chance of a new pregnancy and you experience any pain or unusual bleeding, please do get medical attention as soon as you can.

Sending much love,

Karen x
