2nd Ectopic - is there hope for a healthy pregnancy?

Hi All

This is my first time using this site, I’m hoping for some positive stories.

I’m 39yrs old, I’ve had 4 pregnancies over 8yrs, my first was a normal miscarriage, my 2nd was successful and have our only child, sept 2020 was my 1st ectopic in left tube treated by methotrexate and just yesterday had my 2nd ectopic in right tube treated with methotrexate. I’m quite emotional and wondering Is there hope for a healthy pregnancy after this? TIA for listening.

Hello

I believe although the chance of another ectopic is quite high after two, statistically more women than not have an intrauterine pregnancy if they get pregnant again after two ectopics. But I cannot speak to your specific situation unfortunately. Recurrence probably also depends on the specific cause of the ectopic (if any) which is different for everyone.

I am not sure what your doctor/s have said but I would recommend discussing your situation with at least your GP or preferably a fertility specialist if that is an option, it may be that there are some tests they would recommend for you, or maybe a different approach/certain assistance.

I wish you good luck!

Dear LHC82

I am sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To go through the ordeal once is hard enough and my heart goes out to you that you have had to endure it again. I will do my best to help with your question.

Anecdotally, we do come across people who have had more than one ectopic pregnancy and have managed to go on to conceive. From a conversation with one of our medical advisers a little while ago, I understand that the data are poor regarding the risk after two ectopic pregnancies so I’m afraid it is difficult to provide good statistics. While I am not able to comment on personal cases and am not medically qualified to do so, what I can say is that I understand there is a higher chance of a future pregnancy being in the uterus than not, as Miranda864 has mentioned. I do hope that this can provide some comfort. x

Sending good wishes

Munira

Thank you Miranda864 and Munira for your comments.

There does sound like a glimmer of hope there for a future pregnancy in the uterus but understand the risk are high for another ectopic.

An update with my situation, I went for my 7 day bloods and they have gone up again and was boarderline on whether I had another or 2nd MXT injection or surgery. We decided on the on the 2nd Injection. Hoping this will work.

They have also given me a referal to fertility clinic which is good.

I do hope for the best and for everyone who is going through this.

This site has been so useful and is a great platform for sharing our experiences good or bad.

I really hope the second injection is working for you - and I’m glad you got a referral to a fertility clinic.

Hi, I’m currently pregnant after an ectopic in both tubes - I’m 10 weeks. I had two doses of methotrexate after my first.

From what I read I had a 30% chance of another ectopic after my second, which was scary. Therefore, this is definitely my last pregnancy.

Hi Calliepup

Thank you for your message.

This does give me hope to try again. Fingers crossed.

Huge congratulations and all the best with your pregnancy.
