Unprotected Sex 3 weeks after Surgery

Hi all,

I’m sorry for the TMI  but I had unprotected sex 3 weeks after my ectopic surgery to remove my right tube.

My surgery was 05/10, the unprotected sex was 25/10. My doctor didn’t advise that I would have to wait two cycles as I’ve read recently.

I can feel my belly hurting and also I have sore breasts, does this mean I am ovulating?

I’m panicking now in case my body hasn’t recovered and I could get pregnant.

Has anyone experienced getting pregnant within the first few weeks post op?

Thank you xxx

Dear daniellelouise96,

Before you can have a period you have to ovulate. It is possible to ovulate within 14 days after surgical treatment so it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first if you are not using some form of contraception.

I would advise taking a pregnancy test on the day of your expected period. If it is positive, contact your local EPU to book in for an early pregnancy scan at around 6 weeks. If it is negative, take another test a week later.

Sadly I do have to remind you that if there is a chance you could be pregnant and you develop any unusual bleeding or abdominal pain or you feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

As a gentle reminder regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels.

Sending much love,

Karen x
