Dear Zahia,

I am so sorry to hear of your pregnancy loss,

Unfortunately we are not able to provide personalised medical advice, however I am not aware of erectile dysfunction causing miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Miscarriage is sadly quite common with an estimate of 1 in 5 pregnancies ending in miscarriage. Although the reasons for ectopic pregnancy are not always it is commonly caused by the fertilised egg becoming caught or delayed while progressing along the Fallopian tube and occurs in 1in 80 pregnancies.

Sometimes issues such as diabetes may cause issues with sperm motility and erectile dysfunction may cause issues with ejaculation of sperm which may reduce the chance of becoming pregnant in the first instance, but I am not sure if any medical evidence of them causing miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies.

If you are concerned, I would advise you and your partner to book an appointment with your GP or medical practitioner to discuss pre-conception advice with a medical professional who will have all your personal details to hand and be able to provide individualized medical advice.

Regarding trying to conceive, if you were found to have an ectopic pregnancy, the chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

The charity the Miscarriage Association will also have a lot more dedicated information and support too. https://www.miscarriageassociation.org.uk/

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,
