Stress in the waiting

I had an ectopic pregnancy in June 2022 (left side) and then a miscarriage (ovulated on my right side) in January 2023. We just tried to conceive again and I am 2 DPO and feeling some cramps on the left and right. I swear I felt my right side ovulate (little pinches on the day my ovulation test was positive) but now feeling cramping also on left after ovulation. I feel like I’m going crazy just sitting and having to wait to see how this pregnancy turns out. I’m hyper aware and sensitive down there since my ectopic but feel super alone in my head just trying to distract myself while I wait until I can take a test and get a scan.

The waiting period feels like years! Anyone else…?

Dear Alex,

I can really relate to the worry and anxiety every month whilst trying to conceive following ectopic pregnancy and loss. Every twinge is a reminder of our previous losses and negative outcomes. I wish I had a way to make you feel better or make time to faster. I guess what I can say is that you are not alone in feeling this way and we sometimes feel solidarity and validation in our feelings when we know we’re not alone.

As a reminder, the chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.I

Sending much love,
