Scared

Hello!

I suffered a ruptured ectopic exactly a year ago today. I wasn’t aware it was ectopic until I woke up in intensive care and the loss of my right tube. I found out I was pregnant today… I did the test as I was quite unwell yesterday, being sick and pain in my tummy. I am so scared it’s going to go the same way as last year. Do I ring the doctors or the early pregnancy unit or just wait? I am so sad that this time is so tainted rather than filled with happiness. I have a 2 year old daughter and I can’t remember how it felt in the early days! Based in the UK

Thank you for reading, X

Hi, I rang my early pregnancy unit directly but also let my GP know, I suppose it depends on your closest unit? They did my bloods every 48 hours til I was able to be scanned then scanned me, GP not involved at all.

I had an ectopic with my first pregnancy and I’m currently 5 weeks now. I look for blood every time I go to the loo and am constantly anxious about every twinge and one of my friends who has just had a beautiful baby boy after a lot of miscarriages said to me that ‘worry is the theif of joy’ and it really is true. I’ve never had a normal pregnancy so I can’t imagine how nice it would be but I’m trying my best not to let worry steal my joy! I hope you can still get some of yours! X

Dear Viclsfryn and CER,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancies.

Viclsfryn, speaking from UK medical practice and standards, usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark.

We advise contacting your local EPU, reminding them of your ectopic pregnancy and booking an appointment. If you are unable to self refer, contact your GP who will be able to do this for you.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x

Thank you. I rang the EPU and they told me I had to wait and do another pregnancy test at the end of this week to be sure I was pregnant (on all my tests the lines were faint). I did a digital test and it has confirmed I am pregnant so I will ring again tomorrow.

I feel so unsure of what, or if I have any Ectopic symptoms. My last ectopic was all a bit of a blur. I was rushed into hospital and had to be resuscitated in A+E and wasn’t aware of my baby loss until I woke up so I have nothing really to compare this too. I am feeling a little dizzy and sick but it feels like morning sickness… It’s so hard to know!

Thanks again for your support! And I hope everything goes well for you CER.
