Pregnant after Ectopic

Hi all wanting some advice please! I’m pregnant again after an ectopic in June resulting in surgery and the removal of my right tube. I didn’t rupture and was only 4 weeks but by the time they could see anything on the scan my HcG levels were over 5000 so surgery was the only course of action. Afterwards the surgeon said I had internal fusing and legions that were probably as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease after my cesarean with my first pregnancy. I had no idea and very shocked to hear this!

I am now pregnant again (quickest we’ve ever caught) and went straight to the docs for bloods cause mine rise so quickly and I’m scared of losing the left tube! First bloods last Thursday were 184, had to wait til Monday for the next lot and they had jumped to over 1000! The doc said he was happy and no need for further tests. However I am now experiencing pulsing, twinging and sharp stabbing pains on my left side.

I just know that if this pregnancy is ectopic too they won’t see anything until it is too late for methotrexate. But I don’t want to end the pregnancy unless I am sure it is ectopic. Has anyone else been in a similar boat??

Thanks for reading x

Update for anyone interested. I managed to get in for a scan. They can see a cystic sac in my uterus but can’t rule out the chance that it may be a sudo-sac that is masking an ectopic. So relieved they can see something! There was nothing in my uterus last time. Now waiting on bloods and for an examination…

Dear Zanna32,

I’m glad you have had a scan as I would have advised urgent medical attention given your symptoms and past history.

It may well be too early too see anything which is why they have requested further tests.

If you experience any further pain or bleeding, shoulder tip pain or feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x

Thanks Karen. So far so good pain wise and HcG is nearly tripling so looking less likely to be another ectopic.

Hi ,

Exact same story with me. Ectopic detected in June totally shocked to find out it was because my previous c sec caused scarring etc I had no symptoms or pain. They removed my right tube.

I just found out I am pregnant again and terrified of a repeat ordeal. I have more symptoms this time of pregnancy…agonising boobs and aches in my womb, tired, moody and sensitive sense of smell  I called EPU and they palmed me off until 6 weeks so now I face a terrifying 2 weeks of waiting which frankly makes me want to vomit  I am taking an reassurance that more symptoms at least shows some difference to last time!

Dear Wildchild100,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

After an ectopic pregnancy, finding we are pregnant again can be a mix of emotions and I can completely understand your feeling nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel scared after the ordeal you have endured. I certainly felt twinges and aches after my ectopic pregnancy, particularly when I next felt pregnant. My mind started racing and I was only really able to relax to some degree after my early scan. It is a nerve-wracking time and you have a friend here who understands how you are feeling.

Speaking from UK medical practice and standards, usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark, so this is why your EPU have booked you in at this stage. Having said this, whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

I know how the days seem to drag towards the date of the scan and waiting feels like forever! I felt that too with my subsequent pregnancy. You are not alone and I will be thinking of you for your scan when hopefully your doctors can provide you with the reassurance that you need.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Dear Wildchild

So sorry I’ve not read your reply until this evening. Strangely comforting to know someone has gone through the same as me though I wish it had been different for both of us!

I’m going in for another scan in the morning. Hoping and praying that they see a yolk sac. Morning sickness struck on Sunday and has been with me all day everyday since so hopefully that’s a good sign!

Try not to worry and to stay positive. I’ve heard countless stories of women going on to have healthy pregnancies after an ectopic. In fact, my mum had me (and 2 more) after one!

Will post how I get on tomorrow. X

Update:

Scan went brilliantly. Even via an external scan she was able to see a yolk sac, 3mm baby and detect the heartbeat. Our bodies are amazing things! So definitely not ectopic. Just the usual worry for the rest of the pregnancy now!

Dear Zanna32,

That is great news, thank you so much for keeping us updated.

Sending warm hugs and positive thoughts for the rest of your pregnancy.

Hi All!thanks for sharing! I had two ectopics and my tube removed the second time. Now pregnant and having discomfort on both sides but more on the side of the ectopic…I’m wondering if it’s related to scar tissue…any of you ladies have similar experiences?
