September 6th 2021 I underwent surgery to remove my right Fallopian tube after methotrexate failed. My hCG had since fallen to nearly 0 just over a week later. That being said, it’s now October 25 and I’ve still not had a period. And to make matters worse, (thinking I had already finished ovulating and was about to start a period) we had unprotected intercourse……not my best judgement in hindsight but just reaching out to anyone for advice. How long did your bleed wait to return? Or did you become pregnant soon after methotrexate? What was the outcome? So anxious….
SCRATCH THAT. I literally just took a test and it’s strongly positive. No symptoms besides slightly sensitive smell and minor increase in appetite. What are my chances so soon after methotrexate??? Ugh this cannot be happening
Dear Maria-kay,
Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy.
Although I do not wish to alarm you, I would strongly advise seeking medical advice about this current pregnancy. Unfortunately methotrexate can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. We would usually advise taking folic acid supplements for 12 weeks after methotrexate (as you had surgery, you would not have needed to wait for hCG levels to drop). A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.
Seeking medical advice will hopefully out your mind at rest.
Sending much love,
Karen x
