Post Expectant Management

I was discharged at HCG 6 after 11 weeks of expectant management. Scanned at 12 weeks and they could see a mass in same tube? Different hospitals so didn’t have notes. Can sac stay longer that HCG? Or should I be concerned it hasn’t dissolved?

Dear marmoannie,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

With treatment for ectopic pregnancy through expectant management, when the pregnancy is ended, the whole pregnancy sac including any cells that might have grown into a baby is usually reabsorbed by the body. This is normal and happens in many cases of miscarriage. This process can take weeks and sometimes months. In some cases, the Fallopian tube may remain blocked and take time to shrink.

The reabsorption can take weeks and sometimes months to be complete. I am afraid it can be difficult to be precise because our bodies are all unique and we respond differently physiologically with what is happening. In some instances, the fallopian tube may remain blocked by the pregnancy tissue which can take some time to shrink and, occasionally, it may not shrink and will leave a blockage in the tube by way of a small cyst. However, this does not reduce the chances of successful future pregnancy, whatever the outcome in the affected fallopian tube.

The chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time. It maybe of some comfort to know that overall, 65% of women are healthily pregnant within 18 months of an ectopic pregnancy. Some studies suggest this figure rises to around 85% over two years.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thank you.

Sorry Karen I meant to ask do you know am I still at chance of rupture at this stage?

Dear Marmoannie,

Once your hCG levels have reached pre pregnancy levels you are no longer at risk of rupture as the cells are not dividing. Build up slowly with excercise as your body has been through an ordeal.

Please also take time to recover emotionally,

Sending much love,

I just wanted to update for anyone who might be looking for answers after Expectant Management. It’s been six months (25mm) since my ectopic was diagnosed and I’ve just had a scan showing it is now 6mm. Three months ago it was 11mm.
