Periods changed post ectopic?

Hi all, I had miscarriage in March 2017 followed by ectopic treated successfully by MTX in July/Aug 2017. We haven’t tried since as we needed a break. Recently, I have noticed that my periods have changed quite a bit. Previously, I used to have bright red bleed and my periods lasted for 6-7 days. For the last 3-4 months, its only dark brown spotting that lasts 3-4 days. Is it normal? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks x

Dear nm2808,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your bleeding pattern.

What I can say is that my periods also changed following methotrexate injection. If you are concerned, please speak to your GP.

The chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

Sending much love,

Karen x
