Periods after ectopic

Hi everyone,

A little about me: I had an ectopic in June, treated at 7 weeks with methotrexate. It took about 3 weeks for the beta hcg to return to 0 and then I got my first period 2 weeks after that. I saw a gynaecologist in September as I have also had 2 miscarriages. I have a 3 year old daughter, who’s pregnancy was easy, no complications. The gynae was very lovely (dr karen Morton) who said ‘you must be strong, you need to take courage and try again’. So that is what I am trying to hold onto…

So here I am back trying to conceive again- I just had a period, and a couple of days after stopping it has started again, very lightly. I feel so annoyed with my body- when will it stop being Wierd and just get back to being vaguely normal? I just wondered if any of you had experienced crazy cycles after the injection?

I think I am just feeling fed up today- I feel the loss for my daughter, as it was her birthday at the weekend and I so deeply want her to have a brother or sister and I thought she would by now.

Thanks for your help,

Mrs b

Dear Mrs B

I’m sorry to hear you are feeling fed up - it is such an emotional rollercoaster of an experience and I hope we can help you feel a bit better in knowing that you are not alone.

There isn’t really a medical reason for it, but women do often report that it takes a little while for their cycles to return to normal after treatment for an ectopic pregnancy. I wondered if you have read the section on our website on “Bleeding and Periods” here - http://www.ectopic.org.uk/patients/your … pregnancy/

The other thing to say is that, if you are trying to conceive and you do notice any unusual bleeding, pain or other symptoms, it is always best to put your mind at ease by doing a pregnancy test. I’m not trying to alarm you so please don’t panic. It is just that with our histories it is always best to know earlier if there is any chance of another ectopic. We also have more information on the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy on the website here -

Much love
