Pain after laparascopy

Hi,

Brand new here. I had a laparascopy last night after waiting 24 hours to go in. Everything went to plan but obviously today I’m in discomfort. The pains in my stomach I can understand, while it’s not pleasant it’s no worse than after many sit ups!

The worst part is an aching on my neck and chest/upper back area, and shoulder. I presume this is due to gas, but it’s so bad, especially after sleeping, that I’m finding it difficult to get out of a lying down position.

Anyone got any tips for getting rid of the remaining gas from my system?

Thanks

Hi, I’m new here too. Can’t offer a whole lot of advice - I’m 9 days post laparoscopy now and like you I found the neck/shoulder pain (presumably from gas) the worst bit. Lying down was easier, paracetamol helped but really only time eased it, gradually had less pain each day until about the 4th or 5th day I had no further shoulder pain. Nothing I could find online gave me any answers. I really hope you feel better soon.

Hi Emcano

The nurses on the ward suggested peppermint water or peppermint tea to me to help the body process the gas. I really dislike peppermint of any kind but gave the tea a go because I suffered really badly with pain from the gas after my first ep, it was excruciating. It seemed to work for me, I still got some shoulder pain for a couple of days after surgery but nowhere near as bad as after my first ep.

I also used a microwaveable heat pad on my shoulders, which helped.

Xx

Thanks so much both of you. It’s starting to feel a little easier today and my husband popped out to get peppermint tea so will start on that. Trying to sleep as much as possible as well in the hope that when I wake up it’ll be better still! xx

Hi there, sorry to hear about your experience and the pain you are in. I too felt that the shoulder and back pain was so sore. Hope the peppermint tea helps. I found just lots of rest and paracetamol helped. It takes a while for the gas to all get out and swelling to go down. I also found eating little and often helped. If I ate too much at once it have me indigestion and the gas was more painful.

I’m 5 weeks post op and physically so much better so you will get there, just take your time xxxx
