New here and feel very confused

Hi everyone, I’ve been Googling a lot since yesterday afternoon, I found out I was pregnant last week, started bleeding Saturday-watery brown with lower back pain, had scan yesterday suspected ectopic so had a consultant scan to confirm, had bloods taken and was told I needed to wait until they came back as to whether I have the injection or surgery.

A few hours later my bloods came back as 41 and the next consultant I saw was horrid, she came into my room and said I’m not even sure it’s ectopic as your levels are so low so you can go and come back for a blood test in 2 days, I said it’s been confirmed by scan by a consultant and she said well I’m a consultant aswell and left the room, she didn’t tell me to come back in case of pain, bleeding nothing I had to find out this information online.

I just wanted to know peoples experiences of watching and waiting I am very nervous as from what I’ve read the tube can still rupture even if hcg is low, I just want this process to be over and feel like it’s going to be a long and anxious road right now :sob:

Sorry you’re experiencing this. So annoying about the consultant. I found the communication dire between the consultant/nurse and myself. They tell you little and you have to research.

I’m not a medical professional but if you have a very low hcg that’s above 20 then to my knowledge they should be monitoring you weekly until you are below 20, some places will say 10 or 0. The reason is there’s a possibility your hcg could increase after declining and that’s not good.

Did the scan show a baby outside your womb? I had scans they never found a baby they only said etopic because my hcg went up down up.

I don’t think you will have a long road ahead is your hcg declines, when I went from 50 to 16 it took 2 weeks.

Thankyou, yes they can see it in my right tube, I done a test today and the line is a lot darker than my one on Sunday so I’m worried my levels have gone up  I have bright red bleeding now and a bit more pain I have to go back in the morning for repeat bloods and another scan. I’m sorry you have been through it, did you have any injection or did your levels go down by itself? X

A darker line on a pregnancy test is definitely your hcg increasing, but try not to worry as you are being monitored. They may give you options tomorrow if your hcg is increasing. I think expectant management is usually advised if the hcg is decreasing by itself then they will just monitor.

I had a similar experience. At nearly 6 weeks I had severe what I thought was trapped wind and gas, then bleeding. Told miscarriage as hcg had dropped. 2 weeks later had bloods my hcg had doubled told pregnancy in an unknown location. Told I had to decide ASAP operation or mtx injection. Did injection.

12 weeks bleeding. 10 weeks of pain. I’m 2 weeks since I got to a hcg of 0. Waiting for my first period in 5 months.

It’s a hard time isn’t it? Such a disappointment. Then the fear of it rupturing. All you want is to go back to normal.

Dear fluffpuff,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss.

Yes your hCG levels are low, but if an ectopic pregnancy has been viewed in your tube then that is diagnostic and I’m so sorry that your second doctor wasn’t more supportive.

I am also sorry you didn’t get the information you should about worsening signs and symptoms and when to return. I am glad you have found the information on a website.

We have lots of information on our website too which you may find helpful -

https://ectopic.org.uk/diagnosing-an-ectopic-pregnancy

Just to reiterate, I would advise seeking urgent medical advice with any worsening pain or bleeding, you develop pain or pressure when going to the toilet, shoulder tip pain or begin to feel dizzy and unwell.

Single hCG levels aren’t helpful as a trend is needed to see If they are indeed increasing or going down and how quickly they are increasing. I am glad to see you have further bloods and another scan booked in. If you aren’t happy with the doctor that spoke to you, you can ask for someone else. Hopefully there will be a different doctor on tomorrow. If you have any questions, I would suggest writing them down so you don’t forget them when you are there and then you will be able to get all the answers you need.

Treatment will depend upon how high your hCG levels are and if there are any signs of bleeding in your tummy and how well you are in yourself.

We will be thinking of you tomorrow, but as I have said, please seek urgent medical advice sooner if you have any worsening symptoms or you are concerned.

Sending much love,

Karen x
