Help, I don’t know what’s happening

Hi, long story but I thought I’d have a miscarriage 5 weeks ago but had ongoing pregnancy symptoms and had a terrible sharp pain and dizziness last Monday. It eased off after about an hour and turned into a dull pain. I spoke to my GP who referred me to EPU and I went for a scan on Tuesday. The sonographer confirmed it looked like an ectopic pregnancy in my right tube and there was a lot of fluid around which they thought was internal bleeding. They prepared me for surgery but whilst on my way to theatre another patient needed to go first so they turned me round and put me on a ward waiting. During this time the shift changed and another consultant took over who was unhappy they had not done a HCG test and wanted this before taking me to theatre. They were surprised I was generally well, had no dizziness or pain as they’d expect with ruptured ectopic so wanted to be sure. My HCG level came back at 34000 which is sky high for ectopic and therefore she said she wasn’t sure it was ectopic and wanted to do further tests the following day. I waited in hospital all day Wednesday as the radiographer they wanted to consult with was not available. On Thursday they said the radiologist had reviewed the scan and thought it was ectopic so didn’t want to perform CT/MRI scans. They wanted to check my HCG again to see if it had gone down, unfortunately they messed up with the blood test so I didn’t get the result until Friday morning when they said it had come down to 27000 and therefore they were sending me home and had to go back the following day for a follow up HCG test. Yesterday my HCG result has only come down by 200. I’m waiting for the doctor to call me when they’ve reviewed but I’m going out my mind with worry. I have also started spotting dark brown discharge.

They think my HCG is too high for ectopic but they’re not investigating what else it could be and I’m frightened if it is ectopic and my HCG is so high it might rupture. I understand not having surgery when I’m generally well but I need to understand what is happening.

I hope you got some rest, not knowing if I had an ectopic pregnancy or not I found terrifying. After six days Dr diagnosed ectopic (no rupture). A (normal) ruptured follicular cyst made diagnosis harder.

Careful with hcg levels; dr mentioned the trend is what she watches not any particular number.

I found it essential to not be home alone, and to have my person with me either on the phone or physically with me for all appointments. I could better relay my symptom updates, ask questions, and retain information with my person there for me.

Thank you so much for your response and sharing your experience. I had an MRI today and they have suggested it is either an ectopic pregnancy or germ cell tumour. :pensive:

My HCG levels have dropped to 20000. I should have a plan tomorrow when they have discussed more internally.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. It must be so hard to not know what’s going on, to not have an answer. Hope you hear soon and get some answers so you can move forward.

Dear Kmh,

I am so sorry to hear of the worrying time you are going through and I hope you have been given some more answers today. It can be very overwhelming not knowing what is going on with our bodies and we will be here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love,

Karen x
