My EP experience

Hi,

I found this site yesterday, which I think is wonderful, and wanted to share with you my EP experience.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 4 years. We have had all the tests to see what has been the problem, however it turns out that we have ‘unexplained infertility’.

For the past 12 months we have undergone IUI and have recently completed our 4th attempt. I did not think it had worked as I had my usual AF. However, I noticed it continue on for a longer time than normal. My AF is usually 5 days and over and done with. This time I was going well into my 2nd week and knew something was not quite right. I had been monitoring my body for 4 years and just knew all was not as it should be. I gave the nurse a call at the fertility clinic to have my mind put at rest. She said that it was probably my hormones, especially since I had been on clomid. I insisted that it was not and pushed a bit harder saying that what was happening just was not me. She asked if I had done a pregnancy test, but I said no as I had bled so much? Anyway, she allowed me to come in the next morning and asked me to take in a urine sample.

Following my call to the hospital, I subsequently started getting stomach ache. It was bearable, so I thought, however I did not sleep that night. The next morning I went in and they tested my sample to give me the result that it was positive. After 4 years I was overjoyed! However, then came the ‘buts’. The nurse was not happy with my symptoms and advised that I would probably not keep this pregnancy and suggested that I would almost certainly miscarry. To be on the safe side, she managed to get me into scanning to check things out.

It was quickly established that I was 6 weeks gone, however they could not find it. My stomach was also full of blood. I was passed to a doctor and had more and more tests and by the lunchtime I was down on the list for an emergency operation with a suspected ectopic!

On July 5th 2006, I woke to find that it had been an ectopic. The pregnancy was in my right tube and it had ruptured. They took my right tube away and drained off over a pint of blood from my stomach. The surgeon was amazed that I had been standing when I entered the hospital.

The experience has been devastating and I am still coming to terms with it. I still have pains now and am trying to take it easy. I am remaining positive though as the only glimmer of hope that I am holding on to right now is that I did get pregnant finally after 4 years, and I hope that it will happen again. I am not going to give up. We will start IVF later this year and I will keep everything crossed that it works out in the end.

Sorry it’s a lot, but so nice to put everything down in writing. Many thanks for reading and lots of luck for the future for everyone.
