Hi there, I’m a vegan too What are the dietary requirements with Methotrexate? Obviously I am not a medical professional but am a healthy vegan of nearly 20 years. If you’re looking to build up your folate and iron afterwards, I would suggest vegan supplements and focussing on nuts and seeds, spinach and unprocessed vegan protein sources. But let me know if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick there xx
Dear B1b2,
It is recommended that you should stop taking any vitamins, minerals, or other medicines unless you have been told by the doctors treating you to continue with them, as some interfere with the effects of methotrexate. It is particularly important that you do not take any folic acid supplements and avoid foods enriched with folic acid until your doctors are sure that the drug has worked and hCG hormone level has returned to non-pregnant.
Only small amounts of folate are found naturally in food sources. The NHS lists the below as ‘good’ sources of folate:
• broccoli
• brussels sprouts
• leafy green vegetables, such as cabbage, kale, spring greens and spinach
• peas
• chickpeas and kidney beans
• breakfast cereals fortified with folic acid
I hope this helps.
Sending love and good wishes,
Sophie
