foods to eat after taking methotrexate for ectopic pregnancy

I had three surgeries before I got pregnant few days back but it end up with ectopic pregnancy.

I had first shot of methotrexate today (31-Aug-2017). Doctor suggested not to take any food which contains folic acid or Iron. I see most of the foods have got it.

I am feeling hungry but scared to eat anything. Is apples, Eggs, Rice are OK? Can you please suggest what can I eat?

Currently My HCG level is 4185 , do you think I can avoid surgery.

Appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hi Nyaali,

I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this worrying time. Your diagnosis is very recent, and it’s very important that you are looking after yourself in these next days and weeks.

While I’m not a medical professional and cannot comment on your specific case, during treatment with methotrexate the Trust does advise: “You should stop taking any vitamins, minerals or other medicines unless you have been told by the doctors treating you to continue with them, as some medicines interfere with the effects of methotrexate. It is particularly important that you do not take any folic acid supplements until your doctors are sure that the drug has worked.” https://www.ectopic.org.uk/patients/treatment/

You may want to clarify with your GP on the types of foods they were advising you to avoid, or if they were advising avoidance of supplements as mentioned above.

Methotrexate is most effective in the earlier stages of pregnancy, usually when the pregnancy hormone ‘beta hCG’ level is below 5000 mIU/mL. Your doctors are looking to see a drop in your hCG value of at least 15% between days four and seven. A few days after the injection, it is usual to begin to bleed and this bleeding can last between a few days and up to 6 weeks. Every 3-7 days, beta hCG levels will continue to be monitored to ensure that they are falling appropriately. Most women only need one injection but in up to a quarter of cases a further injection may be required if serum hCG levels are not decreasing.

While I do not want to alarm you, it can be possible to rupture with low/falling hormone levels until under 5mIU/mL (which is considered no longer pregnant). It is important to continue monitoring your symptoms during this time.

Please know this is a safe space for your thoughts and concerns, and we are here for you for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele
