Methotrexate AFTER surgery- anyone else?

Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone has a similar experience. I was diagnosed with an ectopic at the beginning of the month, which led to surgery the same day. As I have had a previous ectopic and lost my tube, the surgeon did everything she could to save my other tube and succeeded… Great news I thought…

My HCG levels dropped from 6500 to 450 in a week… but then went back up to 750 and stuck around there, so I was told something must have been left behind and needed Methotrexate, I really didn’t want to have it, but didn’t really have a choice, and thought at least it will all be over… anyway I just had my day 4 bloods back and it’s gone up to 850… I know that can be common when only treated with MTX, but as my pregnancy had already been removed it wasn’t expected for me… I bled heavily for 2 weeks after surgery which then stopped and have had no bleeding for over a week. Now on day 5 after MTX have started bleeding again.

Does anyone have a similar experience, and can let me know how it turned out… I’m struggling to find others who’ve needed MTX after surgery and worried about needing further MTX or even further surgery.

Dear jadaalexandra,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses,

Following ectopic pregnancy, it can take a few weeks for hCG levels to fall to non pregnant levels and it maybe possible that blood tests are still showing hCG from ectopic pregnancy. However, as I am not medically trained I am unable to comment on why they seem to be rising and you are doing right thing in speaking to your doctors. I would ask them if they intend to rescan you if they haven’t already

Although I do not wish to alarm you, as your levels are rising, I would like to gently remind you to seek urgent medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding/pain/increased body temperature.

Sending much love and warm hugs,

Karen x

Hi, I had surgery in September for ectopic and needed methotrexate 3 weeks later as my levels were rising. They were around 1300. I was terrified and devastated, like you, I particularly struggled as others had gone through either surgery or methotrexate and not many people seems to need methotrexate after surgery. My levels did gradually drop over 4 weeks or so. It’s such a hard time when you’re waiting and it feels like you can’t move on and start to recover. I bled after the methotrexate for around 4-5 days. Hopefully the bleed is a good sign for you too and means your levels are dropping. I had counselling during this time and continued to have counselling afterwards. I struggled so much with the loss of control and worry about the hcg levels. Thinking of you. Lots of love xxx
