Is your second ectopic typically on the same side?

Hi everyone,

I had an ectopic last spring in the left tube. It was managed with expected management. I went on to have a intrauterine pregnancy that sadly ended in miscarriage at 15 weeks. I am now pregnant again and having some intermittent sharp pains on my lower right side and feeling quite nervous about it. When people have multiple ectopics is it typically on the same side?

Thanks very much,

Alexa

Dear Alexa,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

After an ectopic pregnancy and losses, finding we are pregnant again can be a mix of emotions and I can completely understand your feeling nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel scared after our previous experience. When I next fell pregnant I also suffered from aches and twinges and my mind started racing and I was only really able to relax to some degree after my early scan. It is a nerve-wracking time and you have friends here who understand how you are feeling.

I don’t believe there has been any evidence based research into second ectopic pregnancies and the side of the tube. If there has been damage to the tube this may result in increased risk of ectopic pregnancy in that same tube, however we do hear from women who have sadly experienced ectopic pregnancies in both tubes.

Although I do not wish to alarm you, as pain is so subjective, if your symptoms are concerning you or worsening at all, I would suggest seeking urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x
