I very recently lost my right tube due to ectopic pregnancy. I’m only 10 days post surgery but healing very well.
When I was still in hospital, I asked the consultant how long should we wait before we ttc and he seemed stumped by the question. He finally said “whenever you feel like it. Even if you fall pregnant now, it will take time for your stomach to start stretching and by then you’ll be fully recovered from this surgery”. I was surprised by his answer but relieved I wouldn’t have to wait 6 months.
I was discharged the next day and another doc came to see me. This time, he offered his advice without me prompting him 1st and he advised to wait 1 cycle and said it was mainly for dating reasons. And that, of course, I’d need to have an early scan before 7 weeks.
I got home and did my own research, found this website and others. It seems the online consensus is rather to wait 2 or 3 cycles before even trying again. I was just wondering if anyone here had started to actively ttc just 1 or 2 months post surgery? What are the risks (if any)? Or are doctors advising to wait purely to help with the timeline of next pregnancy?
This was supposed to be my first pregnancy. My husband and I can’t wait to start our family. We were lucky to conceive very quickly the 1st time around. Actually on the first month after I stopped contraception. I do realise it might not happen that easily since I have lost a tube which is why we’re quite keen on trying again. It would also be a way to start looking positively into the future instead of thinking of what’s been lost.
I haven’t gone back on the pill and don’t plan to as I do see it as a waste of time honestly…
I’d welcome any advice and personal experiences you might have had.
I’m glad that you are healing well physically… I healed quite well myself but I found that the better I got physically the worse I got emotionally for a while. It’s settled down now thankfully although I still have bad days occasionally. Just be careful to remember to give yourself time to grieve and process what has happened…
I had my ectopic on 11th of March. I was told to wait for two cycles before ttc again… This was for dating purposes and also for any swelling inside to go down and I think also to give me a chance to regroup and process what happened… These are the reasons my consultant gave me during my follow up appointment… I got my first period in April five weeks post surgery and then I got one in May and I began ttc again straight after my period in May. So I’ve only been trying for about four weeks… It was mine and my fiancés first pregnancy and we were over the moon about it… We are very eager to have the baby we have always wanted together so it’s full steam ahead! I lost my left tube in the surgery so I’m trying to remind myself that I might need to have patience when it comes to trying to conceive… Easier said than done though…
I wish you the best of luck and hope you get your good news very soon x
I was told to wait three months but I had a lot of swelling and open surgery. I know it’s hard waiting but it’s important to let the swelling go down and heal up. Your body may be adjusting to its new situation and it takes some time. I too found the emotional things got worse once the physical healing got better. Even once you start trying again it’s scary because nobody wants a second ectopic. Hope you are doing alright and take care
I am also new here. I had my left tube removed 5 days ago. We were TTC for more than a year, found out I was pregnant and run to Hospital because I was sporting and two hours later was told it was ectopic and… you know the rest.
I am feeling much better physically even if has being only 5 days from surgery.
The doctor told me to wait 1 cycle to try again, I really don´t want to wait more than these, at least at the moment…
I am scare is gone take long time with only one tube.
Sorry you’ve been through this. It’s advised to wait 2 cycles/3 months whichever is soonest before ttc again after an ectopic, however you were treated. There are loads of reason for this. Here’s a link into the EPT’s advice - click into the timing section:
The consultant at hosp told me one cycle. But I still had quite a lot of pain until recently (now 8 weeks post op) and I do believe 2 periods is about right as I’m finally feeling healed and back to my normal self. I am desperate to try again but when I had my ectopic I looked for any way to blame myself and didn’t want to rush into ttc if there is a chance of it happening again straight away cos I would think I should have waited x
