Hello,
I’m booked in to have methotrexate tomorrow morning and just wondering how everyone felt after it initially and the days following. Will I be unwell?

Hi Mrs Moo
I had to have 2 doses (one week apart) as my levels weren’t going down (fingers crossed for you for just the one dose) but I found that I didn’t really get many symptoms until 2 days after the injection. Apart from a sore bum initially, I felt okay but just tired.
A few days later I started to get some cramping. I’m very lucky and don’t suffer with bad period cramping but found with these injections that it was quite uncomfortable. You can take paracetamol which I found helped and also a hot water bottle (although not great in this heat! )
My bleeding has been quite consistent and I’m still bleeding nearly 4 weeks from my first round of injections. It’s not as much as I would on a period.
I think the thing that has been the worst is the tiredness. I’m quite active but have found it’s really knocked me out. I’ve found having naps has helped and I’ve made sure I’ve been out for a walk pretty much most days. I’ve also found that my appetite has gone which was surprising but I guess our bodies all react differently.
I hope that you’re doing okay, going through this is really scary. Wishing you lots of luck with your injections and your recovery
Hey. First of all, this was my experience and I hope it’s better for you. After my first shot, I was exhausted. I had spent nine hours at the hospital so I think it was also partly that. Anyway, the following day I spent it mostly on bed because of how tired I was. I also had some nausea and I didn’t feel like eating. That first day I think I only ate crackers because of the nausea. I also had some headache.
I had to get a second shot a week after because my hcg levels had plateaud. The second one was pretty similar symptoms, less exhaustion, but again I think the first time was also related to the long hospital stay.
The nausea was pretty bad the first couple of days after every shot, but it got better. I think it lasted around two or three weeks but in a level I could manage. I also had some headache in the back bit not too bad.
I am really sorry this is happening to you and I hope it gets better soon.
Hey, how did it go? So now you will be having your blood taken twice this week to make sure theres a significant drop in your hcg.
My own experience was I had one dose of methotrexate at 8 weeks pregnant, I had started bleeding 2 weeks prior. I would say the nhs leaflet I was given didn’t cover the side effects I had.
I had an unnatural thirst, no appetite, felt tired, weak, like an out of body experience. Just laid on the sofa. Others have vomiting, diarrhoea, all sorts. I had the injection 23rd Dec 23 so you can imagine Xmas was a hoot! I didn’t have severe cramping or pain like I thought I would from it. Any pain that followed was the same as prior to the injection. Weekly visits to the hospital to check HCG will now happen. I had 10 weekly visits until my hcg git to 16.
Hope you’re OK.
Dear Mrs-moo,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,
I think a lot of people are surprised by the tiredness following Methotrexate injection. Bleeding and pain can also be common.
We have more information on our website about methotrexate treatment which I have added here and I hope you find useful.
