First period very heavy

Hi, I started my first period after my ectopic which was at the end June, treated by expectant management. Although I’m not sure what is normal, its very heavy and also exactly like it was when I did the expectant management. Is this normal or do I need to get doctors advice? Any advise would be appericated!

Dear Dannii42,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Periods can take a while to get into a pattern and flow that is not usual for you. It is normal for your first period to be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical attention.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Dannii,

Just come across this post after spending the day at my local EPU yesterday to diagnose my second ectopic pregnancy. My first was in my left tube and treated with methotrexate!! This time it’s on my right side and I’ve been told the mass is small enough and my bloods are low enough that I can be treated with expectant management. Have to go back for more bloods tomorrow. I was just wondering how long yours took to resolve itself and how long it took for bleeding to start and what your bleed was like. I hardly bled after the injection and was well and back to normal very quickly. xxx

Hi Katy. Really sorry you have gone through this twice. By the time I realised mine was ectopic I had been bleeding for 10 days and thought it was just a long period (I have PCOS). It took roughly round 3 weeks to completely go down to 0 and I was discharged. Again, I really feel for you going through this. My bleeding did stop after about 3 weeks though which was good as I didn’t want the drug. How did you get on? X
