Ectopic decisions

Evening

Today myself and my wife have discovered about our ectopic pregnancy. Gutted is an understatement. We return in a couple of days to have a final scan to confirm and to go through our options.

It’s hard not to go into a google worm hole and start reading everything about each option we have.

How was the best way you found to support your partner? I know I have to be strong for her, but I do acknowledge my own emotions are there as well which I am trying my best to juggle and be a rock for her.

We still are yet to decide what option to go down and I know we can only make that decision, but if there is any advice from anyone on here who has been down the ‘which option is best’ for us, I would be very appreciative for any advice, info etc., outcomes.

Thanks very much!

Dear Ray,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.

We have lots of approved information on our website about ectopic pregnancy and treatment options, to save you slipping further down that Google wormhole.

Regarding options, it really depends upon the hCG hormone level and what can be seen in a scan ie- if there is any fluid in the abdomen and the general health of your wife.

What I would say is that methotrexate has been developed as a less invasive method of treatment than surgery, however it can be quite a long drawn out process, waiting for blood levels to reduce. Also, studies suggest that the chances of successful pregnancy are not significantly different between treatment methods ie whether having a tube removed or methotrexate. From what I understand, the chance of a successful pregnancy is determined much more by the health of the opposite tube.

I hope the next couple of days will provide you with more information to make The decision, but I would speak with your medical team to make a joint decision as to what will be best in your individual circumstances.

We will be here for you both for as long as you need,

Sending much love to yourself and your wife,

Karen x
