I am really struggling. And just need someone to tell me they have had the same thought process and what they went through to make a decision.
I am currently 8+7 and found out 2 weeks ago we were carrying ectopic. Devastated isn’t even the word for it. Have been having regular bloods done and levels are increasing slowly so “not a high risk”. I have been offered all three treatments none of which are nice to make a decision on. However I’m really torn between the injection and surgery. Honestly my brain is telling me surgery as it’s clear cut and we mate get answers for infertility previously experienced. Taking the injection just doesn’t sit well in my body. However putting myself under the knife when I have a small family at home seems incredibly selfish but the stronger route. Can someone tell me im being an idiot or something. My head is so mushed! Sorry for the rant!
Dear Keebcat,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
I’m afraid we will not be able to guide on which is best for you as this decision is usually made between yourselves and the medical team who are aware of your medical history and current health.
Methotrexate can feel a long drawn out process as you have to return for regular bloods and wait I tip your hCG levels have returned to pre pregnancy levels before taking folic acid supplements for 12 weeks before trying to conceive again, however it is not as invasive as surgery which can also have a long recovery period of up to 6 weeks. Following surgery we and other medical professionals also advise that it may be best to wait for at least three months or two full menstrual cycles (periods) before trying to conceive for both physical and emotional reasons.
Regarding ttc, the chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time. Studies also suggest the chances of pregnancy are about same irrespective of type of treatment - Expectant management or medical management or surgery.
I’m sorry that I cannot be more precise on the information but it really is a personal decision. We have more information on options on our website which I have link here and I hope helps.
