Hello. I was wondering if anyone has had an ectopic after an IUD was removed. I have had 2 children, no problem, and had the Paeaguard for 7 yrs. After having it removed to expand our family, my Dr advised there was no waiting period, we could start ttc. After 1 mo. I ended up pregnant, with an ectopic. (Treated w mtx) After many searches online, it seems to be not that uncommon to have an ectopic after an IUD was removed. At this point, I am trying to be as proactive as possible to prevent this from happening again. Could the IUD have inflamed my tubes after removal? Or could they be permanently damaged? If so, would the HSG test be able to prove any of these things? I want to wait at least 6 mos before we start the again, to give my body time to heal and also give my tubes time to reduce any inflammation from the ectopic and the IUD. Im just worried there may be permanent damage, I in which I wouldmy be interested in trying again. Does anyone have any info on having an HSG after having an IUD removed? Any info would be more than helpful. Thanks.
Hi,
I had the Mirena coil and was also told that I could start trying straight away. I was pregnant on my third cycle which turned out to be an ectopic, treated with Methotrexate. It has now been three months and I’m having fertility tests (have other gynae issues) with the hope of having the HSG (though I was told to wait three months before that could be done). I’d seen some research that suggests there is a 0.01% increase chance of an ectopic after having an IUD, and my gut tells me that my hormones weren’t settled after having the IUD removed. I know there are risks associated with HSG but I’m hoping the Consultant will be able to tell me more after my scan before we go done the HSG route. I want as much information as possible though, especially as I only have one tube to start with. I’m not sure I could wait for 6 months though (I’m nearly 38 and this was my first pregnancy), though I do know I’ll never use any form or hormonal or IUD contraception again. Not sure if any of this helps.

I had a mirena coil, well two, back to back for 7 years. I’ve had two ectopic pregnancies, one in January and one in May. Before trying again I’ve been to every fertility specialist, endocrinologist that any and everyone has recommmeded. I’ve never had an std, non smoker so I keep asking for answers. One doctor said to me that it is probable the mirena caused some scarring. I got pretty upset, I had a terrible feeling it was mirenas fault. I’ve also read a journal article about low progesterone being a factor in eps and I read something else saying mirena can affect your bodies ability to produce progesterone after its removal. That being said when it was removed I had normal cycles, normal enough to get pregnant twice but they were ectopic so…
Thank you for your responses. I’m so sorry you have had to go thru this. It’s a horrible thing to go thru. I did have my IUD for 7 yrs, it was non-hormonal. I’m in the USA, and I have been finding stories of ectopic shortly after IUD removal. I had 1 normal cycle after removal. Then I had the ectopic. I have 2 children and no other risks for ectopic. Please update with any tests results, etc. As I am hearing more stories with the IUD and ectopic pregnancy. Thank you.
I just had Paragard (nonhormonal copper iud) removed and got pregnant within one month with what is now a pregnancy of unknown location with a high suspicion of tubal. It does seem odd to me but this study
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/1358688/
found that actually rates of ectopic pregnancies were statistically similar among women with iuds removed and the control group. It’s an old study, though, so I would be interested if there was more recent data
