DEPO CONTRACTION AND EP?

HI

WHEN I HAD MY EP 3 YRS AGO, I NOTICED ALOT OF PEOPLE SAYING THAT THEY HAD BEEN ON THE DEPOPRAVERA (INJECTION) CONTRACTEPTIVE, NOW IM NOT SAYING THERE IS A DEFINATE LINK I WAS JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD EP AFTER THE DEPO…

PLEASE POLL FOR ME, ONLY CURIOUS.

Hi Pips
You poll is welcome to stay but Depo Provera is a progesterone only medication and the link between it and ectopic pregnancy is already clearly established in research. Any Progesterone only contraception however it’s given carries an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if you conceive whilst trying to prevent pregnancy or within a unspecified time frame afterwards.

hi seen this and just had to reply!

i have only ever fell preg(2m/c 1ep) whilst on the depo strage i know! and so far havent managed to fall with out(2yr on/off ttc) and pushing for tests to see why at the moment but just seem to get fobbed off!

take care sweetie

do you mean have people had it at some stage and then later had an ectpic, irespective of time difference between? i was on depo, but then 3,4 yrs ago.

hi ya

i was on the depoprevera.*(can never spell it)

for 5 years from 1993-1999 and although i didnt have any pregnancies during that time it took me 3 years to ttc i went on to have a full pregnancy but in 2004 i suffered an ep,

so in answer to your question hun anytime really…

i certainly havent been ttc since my ep…

it was only because after i had my ep that so many people had mentioned the depo and since having problems i thought i would post my poll… i didnt come on the site for a good year and in that year the information must have come out that there had been a definate link between the two…

anyway i hope youre o.k and making some good friends on this site.

take care matey

Hi,

I’ve had 2 ectopics since being on depo. I stopped taking it to try for a 2nd baby and wallop! 2 ectopics. I didn’t know there was an increased risk. Never thought of the connection. Now I’m wondering… :?

I was never told of the risks when I was given the injection I have since lost 4 babies because of it, what I want to know is why they still give it to young girls, most of whom are probably still taking it unaware of the risks involved

The difficulty is proving that it was actually the depot contraception that contributed

The fact is because on depo contraception there is less need to have barrier protected sexual intercourse there is the suggestion that the increase in sexual transmitted infection could be responsible equally as could the depo injection -

It’s only that we understand better the way in which, doses of progesterone work that we can hypothesize that if you conceive within a short time of stopping the depo contraceptive injection that an ectopic pregnancy might be linked to the medication and its’ and manufacturers would be very quick to jump on doctors backs if they were to cite things that are not research proven as this hypothesis is not yet research proven but more over reported from anecdotal experience

I was on the depo injection from 1999 to 2006 (came off for a year in between and was on the mini pill)

I stopped the injection and waited the 12 wks to leave my system and it wasn’t again until another 12wks that I started getting my periods again and started TTC. That was Aug 06 that I started and had EP in Nov 06 (last injection was Feb 06).

The Dr advised me not to go on the Depo injection or the mini pill again. He obviously thought it was a possible cause.

hi, my partner as always said it was the injection but i was never sure, was on it for five years then come off to try for a baby, took 14 months to see any sign of a period then fell in my third month of having them, but it was ectopic. now its made me wonder, why wasnt i warned of the risks!! why arent all young women warned!!!

I have never had Depo injections, or taken a Progesterone only birth control pills, or any of the high risk factors for occurence.

Still managed to have an EP though :frowning: .
