Confirming future pregnancy

I am preparing to ttc after two previous ectopics. I am really worried about the wait in between a hopefully positive pregnancy test and being able to see the pregnancy on ultrasound. I’m curious, what is the earliest it is possible to confirm a pregnancy with ultrasound?

Dear dlm08,

I completely understand how nerve wracking the wait for scans can be. Speaking from Uk medical practice and standards, Drs usually carry out a transvaginal scan at around 6 weeks as there is a reasonable chance of seeing the embryo at this stage.

We advise contacting your local EPU, reminding them of your previous ectopic pregnancy and booking an appointment. If you are unable to self refer, speak to your GP who will be able to do this for you.

I would always advise seeking medical advice if you develop any abdominal pain or bleeding or feel unwell before the 6 week mark.

Sending much love,

Karen x

I’ve now suffered two previous ectopics and the hospital were super on it with the second time they scanned me at 4.5 weeks due to my previous ectopic and it was confirmed ectopic again so they can tell really early!

I’m so very sorry to hear this but confused as I thought after 2 ectopics this could not happen again. I too have had 2 ectopics in fact just returned from hospital yesterday. I have had both Fallopian tubes removed so if we try again with IVF can this happen again any information would be very helpful xx I hope you are healing and on the road of recovery xxx

It depends on how you were treated. I still have 1 tube. First ectopic tube was removed second ectopic was treated with methotrexate and then I had a HSG to check tube was unblocked which it was. Sadly ectopic can still happen with IVF even without any tubes
