Chances of a 3rd ectopic, experiences please

Hello,

I’ve had two ectopics this year within 6 months. One tube removal and the other surgery left the tube just removed the pregnancy.

Im now left with one scarred tube.

The Dr’s are trying to convince me that another ectopic is unlikely, but both my husband and I are quite scared of trying to conceive again. The last hospital admittance was very traumatic and I don’t think I could go through it again.

Have any of you had two ectopics and gone on to have a natural conception?

Everything I read on here seems to show a third ectopic is actually far more prevalent than the statistics provided by the Dr’s.

We were going to wait till the end of the year before considering ttc but if a third ectopic is on the cards we might not try at all.

Help please x

Dear SammyM,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To experience one loss is difficult to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.

We hear from ladies who naturally conceive following multiple ectopic pregnancies but sadly we do hear from ladies who experience a further ectopic pregnancy. I’m afraid it is difficult to give you a percentage as little evidence is completed in this area.

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We experience a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. We never forget our babies, but we can learn to accept what happened. It is a slow process that might be weeks or months ahead. In time, we can get to a place where we feel comfortable trying again. When this is, is individual for each person. There is no timeframe for recovery, take each day as it comes.

Importantly early scans avail. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

Sending much love,

Karen x

I have had 2 ectopic a within 6 months of each other also and my right tube removed. The last time was in March this year 2020. It’s not 8 months of me still trying and nothing yet. Don’t give up hope! I haven’t yet. It is unlikely to have another now that the problem has been resolved. So unless there’s anything wrong with the other one which I hope to god for both of us there isn’t. Everything will be fine the next time. 65% go on to have a healthy pregnancy next time within the next 18months. It’s scary and it’s hard but it will happen when the time is right. The more you want and think about it the harder it seems to be. If you relax and try not to think as hard as it is. The easier it becomes! It’s not time to give up yet! Good luck to you! I pray for you!

Dear SammyM,

I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered multiple ectopic pregnancies. They are traumas that no one should need to experience even once. Unfortunately I am not medically qualified to discuss your personal situation and I would be guided by your medical team.

It is natural to be worried after everything you have been through. Sadly even with IVF there is the risk of ectopic pregnancy and as you have suffered the condition twice there is sadly an increased risk. However it is important to remember that help is available and your doctors should book you in for an early scan at around six weeks to check that the embryo is in the right place. I am not sure where you are located but if you are in the UK you can also contact your local Early Pregnancy Unit direct and self refer for an early scan. This can also give you peace of mind that you have the care available should you need some reassurance.
