Back to work after methotrexate

Hi all,

I’m new here - had methotrexate on Thursday and attempted to go back to work today but failed miserably and ended up coming home after an hour! Its not terrible pain, more bad discomfort/cramping and I can really only get comfortable if I’m sitting/lying with a hot water bottle. Has anyone else felt like this after methotrexate? How long did it take you to feel normal again?

Thanks x

Dear Abatross,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss. Can I firstly say that you are not a failure for coming home from work today, it was a gargantuan effort going in in the first place.

Personally, I went to work a week after my injection and with hindsight, even that was too early.

When we experience ectopic pregnancy we are suddenly faced with a life threatening emergency and it’s treatment, reduction in fertility, concerns about the future and the loss of our babies. Experiencing any one of these is an ordeal, putting them together is immense and your feelings are completely normal. Methotrexate can also make us exhausted (It did for me), so please take your time for recovery, and speak to your GP about further time off work.

Pain can be normal following methotrexate injection however whilst I do not wish to alarm you, there is also a risk of rupture with low or declining levels. If your pain cannot be managed with the painkillers suggested by your medical team or it is worsening, I would advise calling your EPU, GP or NHS 111 if it is out of hours.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thanks so much Karen. I wish the drs/ nurses would have warned me how hard it would be as they seemed under the impression I’d be fine to work again 3 days post injection! After Monday morning I spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday in bed which was very much needed. Today was day 7 and the first day I’ve felt like myself again all day xx
