Abdominal and leg cramps 2 weeks after

Hi

I had an ectopic and removal of my right tube just over 2 weeks ago. Me and and my partner have had unprotected sex just short of a week after surgery up until now. For the past 3 days I have had cramping and today seems to be worse and has gone down my right leg. Anyone have any advice what it might be? My periods were so irregular before all this but I do get some cramps before a period but they do not last more than a day or 2. Any help woukd be much appreciated. Marianne

Dear Marianne,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Sadly I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your symptoms.

Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal. The pain may be due to adhesions (scar tissue that binds two parts of the body together) which form and take some time to settle. Your body may be preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through. If you find you experience offensive smelling discharge or an increased temperature of more than 37°C or just want to be checked out to be on the safe side, it would be worth asking your doctors to run tests to check for infection. Having said that as the pain is radiating down your leg, I would advise talking to your Dr just to be on the safe side.

I thought I’d mention that before having a period you have to ovulate and it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first, if you are not using contraception. We and many doctors advise waiting at least two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface. We have more information on contraception on our website or talk to your GP or family planning centre.

Sending much love,

Karen x
