Hello, im new here.
I was treated for an ecropic in my left tube with two shots of mtx in january. The consultant only ever mentioned 3 months of avoiding pregnancy.
I asked a nurse and she said 3 months avoiding ttc is emough even after two doses, just make sure i take my folic acid and stay healthy.
However, i asked another nurse thr same question and she advised 6 months as i had two shots! She said to be more cautious as i had double the mount and it could take longer to get out of my system.
We want to start ttc as soon as we can really, can anyone shed light on the differences of opinion over this?
Thank you x
Dear Prettypenny2015,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Some medical professionals (mistakenly) think that because they have administered a second dose of Methotrexate that that they must also double the recovery time for the body. However, even in a second dose of Methotrexate, the dosage is still much lower than for treatment of other conditions and is still metabolised by the body very quickly, therefore the advice is the same regardless if you have had one or two injections.
With Methotrexate, you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (your doctor will advise you when this is through blood tests) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the “wait” and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.
I hope this helps, always here for you,
Karen x

Hello prettypenny2015,
First of all sorry to hear about your loss.
I have been treated twice (2 separate Ep) one dose each.
I was told if I had to get a second dose then I would need to wait 6 months. I was lucky I just required one shot.
So sorry you have suffered two ectopics
im glad you could be treated with injections both times.
Thank you for your advice, i think ill wait til julyish and build myself back up with folic acid for a good while xxxx
Hi,
I also had an ectopic in November 17, I had a single dose of Methotrexate on the 1st Dec 17.
I too was advised to wait 3 months to ttc.
However I was then told by a different nurse to wait 6 months which caused confusion.
I have done some research and to my understanding it can take up to 3 months for the Methotrexate to leave your body. Then it is recommended taking folic acid for 3 months helps prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy.
Hope this helps, I have just hit the 3 month mark and started taking folic acid about 2 weeks ago.
Good luck
Xxx
