Unfortunately, I found out that I have a ectopic pregnancy today … I’ve been treated with methotrexate. I am 5 weeks pregnant. This is my second ectopic and I’ve had two miscarriages…
Last ectopic pregnancy my left tube was removed. This time the doctor gave me to options surgery or methotrexate.
I couldn’t stop crying at the hospital I had to wait 4 hours for the injection. I feel so drained. The doctor was supportive.
The doctor said if it happens again I should go for surgery next time and try for IVF. Too much to take in … I’m thinking is it better to try IVF …
How long will methotrexate take to work ? Will I have the all clear in two weeks …
I wish I knew the reason for why this happens … Xx
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.
I am afraid there is no set pattern on how long it takes for methotrexate to work. It all depends upon our unique physiology and how high the hCG numbers were. Treatment with methotrexate can be a long drawn out process but it isn’t as invasive as surgery, especially given that you have already had surgery in the past.
Please be aware when trying to conceive again, to wait for your hCG levels to drop to pre pregnancy levels and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before ttc.
I know many of us search for reasons as to why this happens and sadly many of us never find an answer. As you have sadly had multiple losses, it maybe worthwhile asking to be referred to a fertility specialist if you haven’t already.
Above all, be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.
