1st period after ectopic

Hi this is my 2nd ectopic in 9 months the 1st time it happened was a living nightmare it’s as if I have a mental block on that part of my life I’m struggling to remember anything. I am 4 weeks past methotrexate and my period has started is that normal i really can’t remember how long it was the last time thank you in advance

Dear donnar44,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses to experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.

To answer your question, your periods can re-start once hCG levels have fallen below about 100mIU/mL and most women find that their period arrives some time in the four weeks after their hCG levels have fallen to 0 if treated with Methotrexate, so this sounds normal.

With limited information from your post though, I can only presume that your hCG levels are back to pre pregnancy levels. If not and you are experiencing bleeding, abdominal pain or feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

As a gentle reminder, we and many medical professionals advise that if you have had treatment using Methotrexate (whether one or two injections), you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (your doctor will advise you when this is through blood tests) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive.

I completely understand just how much of a difficult time it must be for you right now, we are all here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love,

Karen x
