When to be intimate

I had a laparoscopy on 22/12 to remove my right tube following an ectopic pregnancy.

My doctor told me I could try for a baby again in 4-6 weeks. My question is, how long do I need to wait till I can be intimate with my partner again?

Dear Kjkw,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

As a gentle reminder if you are trying to conceive again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. This “wait” is to allow your cycles to resume and have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - important information for checking for ectopic pregnancy in the future. It also allows time for your emotions to surface and be worked through after your ordeal.

There are many other ways to be intimate with your partner however or use contraception, and you can resume this as you feel comfortable. Take things at your own pace.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Karen,

Thank you for getting back to me. I had no plans on trying to conceive at this point, I want to allow my body time to physically and mentally to recover.

Thanks, Kim x

Hi Kim,

I too have been wondering about intimacy. I was diagnosed with my ectopic earlier this week. I’ve been reading that there may be an increased risk of infection with penetration (including things like tampons) for a time after, but my doctor neglected to mention anything about that and I was in too much shock to ask questions. I will follow up with my doctor once I get out of the woods.

I am sorry I don’t have the answer for you but I wanted to reach out and thank you for asking your question. I hope you are feeling better everyday.

The question of when you can become intimate with your partner again after an ectopic pregnancy and methotrexate treatment is also individual and depends on your physical and emotional recovery. Doctors usually recommend waiting a certain amount of time before resuming sexual activity to give your body enough time to heal.

Typically, doctors recommend abstaining from sexual activity for 1-2 weeks after an ectopic pregnancy and methotrexate treatment. However, the exact recommendations may vary depending on your individual condition and your doctor’s recommendations.

It is important to note that in addition to physical recovery, emotional aspects are also important. Couples may experience these events differently, and it is important to discuss your feelings with your partner and make sure that both of you are ready to rebuild a close relationship.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, it is recommended that you discuss them with your doctor to get more specific recommendations, taking into account your individual condition- (.)

My surgeon said 1week! It blew my mind a bit as I’m two weeks post op and can’t even bend down properly to pick something up.
