Was it ectopic?

I lost my right fallopian tube in 2022.

On September 8 2024, I started my menstrual cycle ovulating on the left side. From September 17 to 22, I had sexual activity. My next cycle began on October 3 and 4, and it was particularly heavy with some spotting in the previous 2 days. Since 22nd I also had pain in the left tube’s zone.

Based on my cycle, I estimate that my ovulation occurred between October 12 and 14 but on the right side (where I don’t have a fallopian tube) and I had sexual activity from October 11 to 16.

On October 17, I took my first pregnancy test, which came out positive. The next day, on October 18, I followed up with a beta-hCG test to confirm the pregnancy and the levels was 24. The levels are dropping.

I had pain in the lower abdomen and left side (where I have the intact fallopian tube) since 22nd of September.

When was the fertilisation? Was it an ectopic starting September? But I had my period.

Dear gabriela,

I am so sorry to hear of your losses.

Your question is a difficult one to answer as some people can ovulate early in a cycle. Some people can also experience what they believe is a normal period and then go on to have an ectopic pregnancy, some people won’t bleed at all, some have unusual bleeding or a heavy bleed. It would be difficult to tell from symptoms exactly when ovulation occurred.

It is also possible that as your hCG levels were low and are reducing on their own, that sadly this time you have experienced a miscarriage. Sadly 1 in 8 known pregnancies will end in miscarriage and it is important to note that it is in no way related to the ectopic pregnancy.

I am glad to hear that you got medical advice with your symptoms and you are having your levels monitored.

It is important that you are kind to yourself and allow time to grieve and heal both physically and emotionally.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x
