Surgery but no ectopic pregnancy found but I still have high

I found out I was pregnant on the 9th of December, I started spotting the next day so visited a&e was told not to worry but had a scan next day… no baby and a negative test was told I’d miscarried! But no tests got stronger! Eventually git appointment before new year wher it was confirmed I was pregnant but nothing in scan! Following week hormones have increased to 1457! I had felt unwell all week dizzy, pain in right side intermittently. Scan showed nothing but if fluid in belly but no baby. Was kept in and they did a laparoscopy the next day! Still no baby! 10 days later back to hospital for tests hormone levels have dropped but still high 890+ I now have to wait till this Friday for more blood tests! I’m having belly ache and pains but I don’t know why or for what reason?? I’ve only spotted lightly the whole time! I’m so confused! I just want to know what’s going on and I want to feel like myself again. Still in pain from the surgery thought I’d be better by now! No energy for anything! Has anyone else had this???

Dear Shelleyb38,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

As nothing has been seen on your scans, you may have a pregnancy of unknown location (PUL). This is when there has been a positive pregnancy test but no intra- or extra-uterine pregnancy visualized on transvaginal sonography.

It is still very early days since your surgery and it is common to experience spotting and bleeding as your hCG levels decrease.

It is common to also experience tummy pains but whilst I do not wish to alarm you, if you experience worsening pain, bleeding or begin to feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

Experiencing an ectopic pregnancy is a huge ordeal and you are in the early stages of recovery. Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.

Generally we advise that you should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for how ever long you need. It is important to listen to your body’s signals and pain and feeling tired are your body’s signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.

Sending much love,

Karen x

One if the women st work is pregnant she is due not long before I would have been I know this is going to be hard. I have a note until Friday due back Monday that will have been 3 weeks. I manage supported living services for adults with disabilities so it’s a stressful environment! I didn’t get up till 11 today potters about a bit now I’m shattered again!

Thanks for a quick response!

Hi me again! I’ve been back to hospital and my hormone levels are dropping now at 241. Could I still be st risk of ectopic? I’m worried as I have been bleeding not too much though and I have a pain in my left shoulder! They have said to expect to miscarry and given me 2 more weeks off work?? I’m really confused.cx
