Rupture after MTX

Hi Everyone,

I feel like my HCG levels are on higher end of women who’ve been prescribed MTX rather than surgery, and was just wondering if anyone has experienced rupture even after a dose or two of MTX? My doctor said it’s always a possibility but is not too concerned.

My levels were:

6555 - received injection

7110 - Day 4, went up as expected

5800 - Day 7, went down thankfully

This is an ectopic after an IVF frozen embryo transfer so it’s really draining (IVF, miscarriage, whoops actually ectopic). Very grateful for this wonderful forum which was been comforting during this scary and stressful time!

Dear SG2800,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses. To experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you, especially after all you have been through.

There sadly remains a risk of rupture in declining and even low blood hCG levels and we cannot predict who this will affect. We hear from many women, including myself who are successfully treated with methotrexate without rupture complications. We would advise no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise whilst your levels are declining, do not take anti-inflammatory medications and avoid alcohol.

Although I do not wish to alarm you, I do have to remind you to seek urgent medical advice with any worsening bleeding or abdominal pain or you feel dizzy and unwell.

Above all, he kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x

Dear Karen,

Thank you so much for your helpful reply, and for all that you do for in this wonderful forum!

Although my levels are dropping, the ultrasound showed that the mass has doubled in size in the last week so my doctor and I decided to go ahead and plan for the surgery in a day or two. A little scared, but also relieved in a way as my HCG levels were high so it would have likely been a long time until I had come down on the methotrexate alone.

with many thanks again,

Seema

Dear Seema,

I’m sorry the methotrexate didn’t go as hoped, but I think surgery is a sensible option with increasing size.

We will be here for.you for as long as you need us. Take care through this next stage of recovery. Sending much love and warm hugs,
