Pregnant post ectopic without period

Hi

I found out I had a live twin ectopic that had ruptured on 27th Feb and had surgery to remove my left tube that same day. That was just over 5 weeks ago. In between that time I have unprotected sex twice and for the last couple of days I have felt ‘off.’

I was just wondering ha anyone got pregnant straight after an ectopic without having a period first? I could just be feeling under the weather but I guess the only way to know is to do a test. Should I have had a period by now or not?

Thank you x

Dear AmiGod,

Before having a period you have to ovulate and it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first, if you are not using contraception.

I would advise taking a pregnancy test on the expected day of your period and if it is negative, repeat weekly. I you do not have a period and still feel off, please speak to your GP.

If it is positive, please contact your local EPU, reminding them of your ectopic pregnancy to book an appointment for a scan at around six weeks. If you are unable to self refer, contact your GP who will be able to do this for you.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

As a gentle reminder regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels.

Sending much love,

Karen x
