I got married in November 2022 and had an ectopic pregnancy in January 2023. Treated with one shot of MTX. After the 3 months we started trying again and I have not fallen pregnant at all since. I am now 35 and childless. In regards to the stats why is it only 65 percent get pregnant in 12 months and 85 percent in 2 years is this relating to someone with one less tube? How about those who took MTX… I wasn’t even trying the month I feel pregnant and now I am older and not even falling pregnant been tracking ovulation for over a year… had all the blood tests everything fine. Had a pelvic scan… I just don’t know what’s wrong with me…
Dear Saaarrraaaa,
I very much understand that strong desire to conceive. I appreciate how frustrating it can be if it isn’t happening as quickly as we would like. Conceiving successfully can take time and can take some couples more than a year or so.
While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. This is why we give the statistics of 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.
In terms of chances of future successful pregnancies, studies do not show a significant difference between treatment routes, whether surgical, medical using methotrexate or expectant management (allowing time for the body to resolve the pregnancy itself).
As you have been trying to conceive for over a year and you are 35, I would suggest asking for referral to a fertility specialist as the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months.I
Sending much love,

but why is the stats different from people who haven’t had an ectopic pregnancy… like over 60 percent of couples who haven’t had an ectopic pregnancy would get pregnant in 6 months why have our stats dropped just because of the ectopic ?
Dear saarrraaaa,
Sadly there is little research in the field of ectopic pregnancy so some questions we can give you the answer in statistics as this information can be gathered however, why this happens is a much more complicated question that there is not enough research to answer.
We know that experiencing one ectopic pregnancy sadly increases the risk of a further, which reduces chances of conceiving successfully. We also know that other factors such as increasing age, a person’s general health and reproductive health (and that of their partners) will influence a successful pregnancy. We can only talk in broad terms as we sadly do not have the in-depth information to share.
I would strongly advice seeking medical advice from a fertility expert who can look at your individual circumstances and may be able to give you the more specific information you require.
Sending much love,
