Hi everyone, I have just discovered this forum, I had my Ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery 5 weeks ago tomorrow. I only knew I was pregnant for 1 week before it was all over.
I am waiting for my first cycle to arrive and I am so nervous as I have read a few horror stories.
Can anyone advise me how long it should take for the bleed to finally come through and if their cycle fell into the same as before?? Before pregnancy I would have had mine around this date every month but so far there is no sign but I’m getting cramping and my breasts have been very tender for the last week.
Sorry if tmi.
Hope someone can help xx
Dear Cazzy2000,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss, it is an overwhelming experience and I will do my best to help.
Your periods can take a while to re-establish - they can re-start anything between two and ten weeks after surgery and most women find that their period arrives sometime around week six or seven after surgery.
The first period may be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical attention.
Your periods can take a while to get back to a rhythm that is more usual for you. I also found that my periods changed for a few months after my loss, if they do not settle into a rhythm, please discuss this with your GP. Doctors normally consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters.
I hope you don’t mind me mentioning but we and many medical professionals advise waiting at least two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive again. This “wait” is to allow your cycles to resume and have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - important information for checking for ectopic pregnancy in the future. It also allows time for your emotions to surface and be worked through after your ordeal.
Sending much love,
Karen x

I got mine 5 and a half weeks after my op! I was so happy I cried lol.
It was on a Thursday which was the day I used to come on! Don’t know if that was a coincidence or not! Hope yours comes soon xx
Hi,
My period started five weeks post op and I had cramps for a week leading up to it. My second period has started today and my cycle followed the same pattern it did before. Hopefully yours will arrive soon. Take care. xx
