Need guidance here

I found out in October that I am pregnant. Me and my husband were very happy since this was my first pregnancy . Though after a week I started bleeding, went to the hospital and found out that it was an Ectopic, by then I was six week pregnant and baby’s heartbeat was also noted then. Doctor’ advised surgery to remove the pregnancy considering my hcg levels. They did surgery and removed the pregnancy but were able to save my tube. I am now worried about my saved tube, what if it is blocked , what if i again have ectopic due to that tube.

Hi Shikha,

I am in a similar position, I didn’t have surgery but had the Methotrexate injection to resolve my Ectopic pregnancy. I am concerned that if everything hasn’t been absorbed/dissolved it might cause a blockage for next time. Or if my tube is not in great condition it might happen again also. I have done a bit of research and you can have a HyCoSy treatment where they check your tubes, you have to have this privately though I believe, and I think it can be uncomfortable. I am undecided if I will have this, I think it’s the only way to properly check the condition of your tubes though.

I feel your worry though, it is really nerve wracking.

Dear Shikha and 19457,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses,

In the UK, women aren’t routinely scanned or offered additional investigations to see if a mass or blockage is still present before ttc again.

Following surgery,we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels.

Following methotraxate injections, we and many healthcare professionals recommend to wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL, and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive.

These waits also generally allows time for any masses to be naturally reabsorbed.

It is generally possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy. The time it takes to conceive successfully after an ectopic pregnancy varies considerably from couple to couple. This can be affected by factors including age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have intercourse (sex). Overall, 65% of women are healthily pregnant within 18 months of an ectopic pregnancy. Some studies suggest this figure rises to around 85% over two years.

Sadly, it is not possible to stop an ectopic pregnancy from happening. Importantly, help is available with future pregnancies with an early scan at around six weeks gestation to check that the embryo is in the right place. We are here too for emotional support, as and when you need us.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thank you for your words. However, in most of the case I see that they remove one of the tube . However, in my case they were able to save my tube. I m more worried about that tube.

Hi “19457”

There is not even a single day when I dont think about this . I am really confused if I should go for HSG test or not… Anyways I hope best for all ladies like us.

Hi Shikha,

I know how you feel, it is a very worrying time. I think I have decided to not have the Hycosy treatment but to obviously wait for 3 months before trying again once i am discharged, taking folic supplements for this time of course. If i am still really concerned, I might just have scan to check there isn’t a mass there. I think however I am going to hope for the best and give it another go in 3.5 months and see what happens, I feel reassured that there will be an early scan at 6 weeks as well.

Just know you’re not alone… I think about it all the time too.

Thanks it really helps :). I have also decided to not go for HSG , I discussed the same with me OB/GYN and she said its perfectly ok to not to go for the test. Though she advised me to go for prenatal and folic now. Hoping for the best now  . All the best to you too.
