Heya,
I recently managed to get pregnant whilst my copper coil still being in place
I didn’t realise this could happen. Is it likely that because my coil was in place that’s what caused the pregnancy to be ectopic or is this something that could happen again? I am very frightened of what to do now and especially for contraception as I just do not trust it. Would it be best to just use condoms and not have sex on fertile days as I’m not ready for a pregnancy yet.
TY
Dear Memo,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy.
Could themselves do not cause ectopic pregnancy and are one of the most reliable forms of contraception. There is however an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with coils as in the low chance of you becoming pregnant, it is more likely to be ectopic.
Choice of contraceptive methods depends upon a variety of factors including your physical health and other medication you may be taking. As we are a charity, we cannot provide individualized medical advice and I would therefore speak to your GP or family planning/sexual health team about choosing a reliable method of contraception that’s right for you.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Hey,
I’m not a medical professional, but in researching causes for etopic pregnancies in my own recent past experience I did read if a person gets pregnant with a coil / IUD in place it can increase the chance of an etopic pregnancy quite significantly. Sorry to hear this happened to you. It’s really unfair.
I guess it’s best to speak with your doctor. I can only imagine they will say the chances it will happen again is incredibly low, the coil is 99% not going to get you pregnant and if you did in general an etopic pregnancy is 2% likely to happen.
I feel like you have to make the choice you feel most comfortable with. My own experience of an etopic pregnancy was a little traumatising, the physical pain for 12 weeks. So I personally wouldn’t trust the coil again and look into other contraception.
Definitely talk to your doctor to go over your options.
