My Story - High Hcg

Hi everyone,

I’ve been visiting this page (and many many others) since around the 15th January when I was told I may be having an Ectopic Pregnancy. I haven’t actually found a story like mine (with high hcg levels, no pain, very little bleeding etc), so I thought I would post it just so there is plenty of advise around for other people that don’t have the usual symptoms etc.

I took a pregnancy test on the 27th Dec, at this point i would be around 3 weeks pregnant, this isn’t going from my LMP, because I rarely have sex and know the date of conception (or there abouts).

I started a light bleed on the 17th Dec, 2 days before my period was due, it was brown dischargy, like the end of a period, this lasted for 2 days, then my period didn’t start. On around the 29th Jan I started having more brown blood, very light, mainly when I wiped, this lasted up until around the 10th Jan.

I booked a dating scan at the hospital (because of the bleeding etc), this was on the 15th Jan, and they found an empty uterus, I only had an abdominal scan at this point (no idea why the sonographer didn’t want to do a vaginal), he then performed a pregnancy test, it was positive (as I knew it would be), then he took my bloods and said we would see what the levels were. The next day I got a call and was told my levels were 35,000 (baring in mind at this point I would have been no more than 5 weeks and 6 days), doctor asked me to come back on Thursday 18th for another blood test to see if they were rising, falling, plateauing etc, when I got the results Thursday afternoon, they told me my levels had risen to 45,000 so he booked me back in for another abdominal scan (or vaginal if they still can’t see the pregnancy in my womb), I had this booked in for Monday 22nd Jan (so at this point I would be no more than 6 weeks 6 days).

On the day they still didn’t see anything in my womb, so he performed the vaginal scan and sure enough, there was my ectopic pregnancy :frowning: He phoned two of the nearest hospitals to see if they had any emergency beds for me, I had to get to hospital right away.

I went in straight away, but because I wasn’t having any pain still, and hadn’t bled for a while, I wasn’t sent straight down for surgery, as other emergencies were priority over me. The only thing I remember feeling, other than being petrified, was a “pressure” feeling on both sides of my belly, like where my ovaries are maybe? Anyway, the next day…Tuesday 23rd, I was finally sent to theatre at 7pm for my operation. They located pregnancy in my right tube and removed both the baby and the tube, as although it hadn’t ruptured, it was close to it, so was damaged.

Anyway, that’s basically my story, and my main reason for posting was because for the whole week prior to my op, I was desperately trying to diagnose myself and figure out if I was indeed having an ectopic pregnancy, and every single site I came across, I was finding that people (including professionals) were saying that HCG levels do not rise that high with an Ectopic, but believe me, they do! 45,000 and still rising on the day of surgery.

I also just want to give everyone who is either going through this, or been through this, a massive virtual hug <3 xxx

Dear Sarahjc123,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.

Thank you for being brave and writing about your experiences, it is a stark reminder that ectopic pregnancy can present and progress in so many ways and we must all be vigilant of symptoms.

Please be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x
