Methotrexate or expectant management at 40 years old

Hello.

I am currently being treated for my second ectopic this year.

In January I had one on the right side which was treated with expectant management.

Now it is on the left side, I couldn’t have the methotrexate injection after because they could see a small amount of fluid and I was desperate to keep all my tubes.

If I have this injection I’ll be 41 by the time I can start trying again. I’m also concerned that the methotrexate will damage whatever eggs I have left. On the other hand I’m not sure if my nerves can handle another expectant management plan. Does anyone have any advice

Dear jojow,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy losses. To experience one loss is difficult, dealing with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes goes out to you.

I am not aware of methotrexate causing long term damage to the quality of eggs. We would obviously advise taking folic acid supplements for twelve weeks before trying to conceive (once your hCG levels are back to pre pregnancy levels) and this reduces any problems with egg quality.

As we are a charity, I’m afraid we are unable to provide personalised medical advice and I would suggest talking through your options and concerns with your medical team.

Sending much love,

Karen x
