Long term recovery

Hi

I had an ectopic 6 months ago, previous miscarriage three months before that, and still having pain an discomfort and wondered about others experiences?

I particarly get pain in my left side when I’m ovulating, which is the side my tube was taken. Sometimes I just get random pangs of pain, and if I lift weight or exercise out of the ordinally my scars ache for a couple of days like I’ve done a major work out. Keep wondering if this is all normal and want to feel fit and healthy before embarking on trying again x

Dear Nicole,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses,

Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal over the last few months. The pain may be due to adhesions (scar tissue that binds two parts of the body together) which form and take some time to settle. As you have mentioned, your body may be preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through.

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your pain however, if you are experiencing heightened pain after working out, it maybe worth trying to reduce the intensity for a while and slowly building up. If you attend a gym, could you speak to a fitness instructor about an altered regime for a short while?

If the pain persists, I suggest keeping a pain diary noting when the pain appears, the intensity on a scale of 0-10 and anything that helps the pain eg resting, hot water bottle, paracetamol etc. Visiting your doctors with this information helps them to assess how best to manage your symptoms.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Karen

Thank you for your kind reply. Unfortunately I’m no where near working out and gyms, I’ve just noticed I feel like I have worked out if I do anything quite light, gardening, walking etc I also think lifting my daughter is contributing to the pain.

I will keep a diary though, it’s a good idea and feel a little like I’m wasting the gps time, so gives me a bit more to take with me.

It does feel very similar to the type of pain I’ve had from recovering from a previous c-section so scar tissue could be an explanation.

I’m concerned it’s the c-section which has contributed to miscarriage and ectopic following a healthy pregnancy, so struggling to feel positive about the future x
