How long to conceive after ectopic

Hey all

I had a missed miscarriage in Dec 2020. And now i had a ectopic pregnancy few weeks ago, one of my tubes was removed. Im so scared of another one. I’m mentally preparing myself and telling myself I will conceive. I’m having negative thoughts that it will take years :frowning:

How long did it take till you actually conceived after the 3 months recovery period.

Dear Angel,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses. To experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.

I cannot give you personal experience as I had methotrexate, not surgery, however studies suggest the chances of pregnancy are about same irrespective of type of treatment - Expectant management or medical management or surgery.

The chances of a further ectopic after a first in UK is 10%. So that’s 90% chance of the embryo being in right place next time.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

Importantly, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying - and the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months.

@AngelP

I’ve had 2 losses as well but mine were the other way round, ectopic then miscarriage.

The length of time it would take to conceive with only one tube (or if it would happen at all) was what really worried me after my ectopic last November, particularly as I’m 39. After recovery and 2 periods we started trying again in Feb and I was pregnant after my 3rd cycle in April. Ironically, it had taken much longer to conceive our first child and the second time which was the ectopic and I had two tubes then! Unfortunately this one ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks but I’ve taken it as a sign that it’s not game over yet. After 2 losses in 6 months, I’m praying that next time we’ll get our rainbow baby! Stay positive, hopefully things will work out for you too.

I had mtx not surgery but was successful on my first month trying BUT this was after the 3 month mtx wait and the almost 6 (!) months mental health wait which came after that. So all up I guess over 9 months after I got pregnant with the ectopic? It was past the month my due date would have been. During this time I also worked on fixing my very short luteal phase which I believe was the cause of my ectopic, and I doubt I would have conceived with that issue anyway.

I got pregnant but I should note it’s early days so I don’t know if this will be successful yet, but it’s not ectopic which is important to me.

It’s different for everybody, it really depends on the cause of the ectopic unfortunately, some people have more underlying factors than others. And ectopics do seem to be linked to infertility so unfortunately some people will struggle to conceive.

Have you seen a fertility specialist? After a miscarriage and an ectopic it would be worthwhile. I worked with one and it was very helpful.

Good luck!
