Hello, I have been given contrasting information on how long to take folic acid for before trying again. I read somewhere it’s 3 months but my doctor said that once I hit hcg levels below 5 I can restart taking folic acid and just need to wait until the 3 months since I got methotrexate are up (which may then be around 2 months only). Any suggestions? Thank you
Dear Cee,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss.
We and many other health care professionals recommend waiting until your hCG levels have dropped to below 5 and then take folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive. This is because methotrexate depletes folic acid and low folic acid levels at the beginning of pregnancy increase risk of babies being born with brain and spinal problems.
Best wishes,
