Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any advice about folate levels when trying to conceive again after experiencing an ectopic pregnancy please?
I had a methotrexate injection on 13th Feb which didn’t work followed by surgery a week later. I’m coming up to the 3 month mark for waiting to try again. I have been taking folic tablets since I had a negative pregnancy test after the surgery.
I wondered is it advised to have a blood test to check if your folate level is OK to start trying to conceive again? Is that even something the doctor would do if I asked?
Any advice would be really appreciated, I’m a bit paranoid about the folate thing! Thanks x
Dear dannimary,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,
In the UK it is not common practice to have a blood test for folic acid levels following methotrexate. We and many healthcare professionals advise to take folic acid supplements for 12 weeks after HCG levels have reached pre pregnancy levels, or as in your case following surgery if sadly methotrexate did not work.
I hope this helps,
Sending much love,
Karen x
