First period since ectopic

I’ve just got my first period since being diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy 5 weeks ago. I was put on the watch and wait method and my hormone levels reduced down from 400hcg to 5hcg so I was discharged and left to nature.

I’m having some period pain & a familiar pain on my left hand side which I had during my ectopic. Along with some heavyness in my upper left leg. Does anyone know if this is normal? I’m just slightly worried as these are the exact feelings I had during my left hand tube ectopic. I’m just worried and wondering if this is normal and whether I should go back and see a doctor?

Dear Cre86,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

My periods certainly changed following my ectopic pregnancy. The first period may be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical attention. If you are concerned, I would always advise talking to your GP.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi there,

I’ve had two periods (not including my bleed post salpingectomy) since my ectopic and both have been more painful than before it. In fact, I seem to be feeling a lot more twinges and aches fairly consistently throughout my cycle. I’ve had period pain a few days before and for the first few days of each period, with that feeling through my upper legs that you describe, more significantly on the side of my ectopic. I think this is very normal considering what our bodies have been through. Even though you did not have surgery there is bound to be some inflammation. But if you’re very worried it is probably best to see a doctor. No harm in that xx
