Dull ache with swollen stomach

Hi, I had a ectopic pregnancy in June and was treated by expectant management. Ive had two periods since but I constantly have a dull ache on my left hand side and also a hard bloated stomach, is this normal? The doctor told me that it is more than likely as I’ve been through a traumatic experience that its imagination. I’m really not making this up. I have back ache and a dull pain constantly.

Dear Dannii42,

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your symptoms.

Generally speaking symptoms of bloating should settle after around 6 weeks. Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal. The pain may be due to your body preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through. I normally advise to keep a diary of the pain, noting when you get it, it’s intensity and if anything helps. However as you are getting daily discomfort, I would advise talking to your doctor again, or perhaps getting a second opinion. Informing the doctor of how it is affecting your daily life or if it is affecting you emotionally at all, will help them see how much the pain is affecting you and they may then look at further investigations.

Sending much love,

Karen x
